The variant likely evolved from the BA.3 lineage and may have developed undetected for months, possibly in a chronically infected individual, a phenomenon known as a saltation event. The &#8216;Cicada&#8217; nickname reflects this hidden evolution before detection.<br \/><br \/><br \/>The variant has been identified across multiple regions, including South Africa, Europe, the United States, and Australia. However, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention surveillance data show it remains at low prevalence, typically representing only a small fraction of sequenced cases. It is currently classified as a Variant Under Monitoring.<br \/><br \/><br \/>Symptom patterns appear similar to recent Omicron descendants, with mostly mild respiratory effects including fatigue, sore throat, cough, and mild respiratory discomfort. There is no evidence linking BA.3.2 to higher hospitalisation rates or increased mortality compared to other circulating strains.<br \/><br \/><br \/>Laboratory findings suggest the variant may partially reduce antibody neutralisation from prior infection or vaccination, though this pattern is common among Omicron descendants.
