Every year, on the second Monday of February, people come together to raise awareness and support individuals with epilepsy, their families, and caregivers. He recalls that his first seizure occurred at home while he was asleep. \u201cI do not remember anything about what happened that night,\u201d Eduardo says. The aftermath, however, is draining. \u201cI wake up feeling extremely tired, sometimes needing three days to recover. Depending on how severe the seizure was, I would wake up either at home or in the hospital, surrounded by family members and medical staff.\u201d he explains.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f8684f6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f8684f6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>His current treatment involves taking \u201ca couple of daily pills\u201d \u2014far less than the three to eight pills he took in his younger years. Eduardo also undergoes annual check-ups, including CT scans and EEGs. Though his seizures are now rare (he has not had one in nearly nine years), he knows the condition is unpredictable. \u201cThis illness is like a bear in hibernation. You know it is there, but you do not know when it will come out.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c857160 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"c857160\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-08dee66 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"08dee66\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.m3globalresearch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/diagnosed-with-epilepsy-scaled.jpg?w=800&#038;ssl=1\" title=\"\" alt=\"diagnosed with epilepsy\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-026d4b4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"026d4b4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c0713f2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c0713f2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Epilepsy in the Military <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e72fb51 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e72fb51\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Eduardo\u2019s condition also brought him an unusual experience during his mandatory military service in the late 1970s. Despite disclosing his epilepsy, he completed most of his year-long service without issue\u2014until one night, after a few drinks, he suffered a seizure while sleeping.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e48d880 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e48d880\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW4158953 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW4158953 BCX0\">\u201cIn the military, it was typical for about 50 people to sleep in bunk beds in the same barracks. When I woke up the next morning, I was in the military hospital. Some of my comrades told me how they all carried me out like a military maneuver, running to the infirmary so the doctors could attend to me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW4158953 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f5eba38 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f5eba38\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The next morning, Eduardo woke up in the military hospital and was offered an early discharge. However, he chose to stay. \u201cFor me, the military was an amazing experience,\u201d he says. \u201cI did not want to miss out.\u201d His role was simple\u2014serving drinks in the dining hall\u2014and he relished the camaraderie and freedom to explore northern Spain on weekends. His superiors were surprised by his decision but admired his determination.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fc80265 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"fc80265\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aa1b82a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"aa1b82a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A Life-Changing Seizure <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-40fcbc7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"40fcbc7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One of Eduardo\u2019s most severe seizures occurred when he was 25 years old, just months after he began managing his own restaurant. After days of intense work, he suffered a seizure so critical that his family feared the worst.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-50c1751 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"50c1751\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cThe doctors didn\u2019t think I would survive,\u201d he recalls. \u201cAnd even if I did, they warned I could be left in a vegetative state.\u201d Against all odds, Eduardo fully recovered, a testament to his resilience and the support of his loved ones.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8eb1ec5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8eb1ec5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>He vividly remembers the heroic efforts of his wife, family, and even neighbors during that fateful night. \u201cI was told that because of my wife\u2019s screams in the middle of the night, four neighbors who were quite strong and muscular\u2014people who worked in the fields\u2014came to the house, but they could barely hold me down. The ambulance took an hour to arrive because the bar I run is in a village by a reservoir, far from any hospital. My brother-in-law was with me in the ambulance, performing CPR because I was in a very critical state of asphyxiation.\u201d Eduardo recounts. With proper self-care and the support of loved ones, it is possible to live a fulfilling life.
