In our latest M3 Pulse survey, we asked over 4000 doctors in various countries under what circumstances they believe abortion is an ethical medical procedure. Find out what they think and if there are any differing opinions between female and male doctors.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0ada53c elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0ada53c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Globally, attitudes toward abortion are mixed. A recent survey made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2024\/05\/15\/support-for-legal-abortion-is-widespread-in-many-countries-especially-in-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew Research Center<\/a> indicates an average of 66% of adults in 27 countries believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while 30% oppose it. In the U.S., 63% support legal abortion. European support is high, with 75% or more in nearly every country, except Poland, where 56% support legal abortion. Swedes are especially supportive; 95% say it should be legal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eef4fe6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eef4fe6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Views vary in the Asia-Pacific region and are generally more restrictive in African countries and parts of South America. For instance, seven-in-ten adults in Brazil say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d0ef3c0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d0ef3c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Louisiana has recently classified two common abortion pills as controlled substances, making possession without a prescription punishable by fines or prison.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c722llz5dz3o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*<\/a> Abortion advocates fear this may inspire similar actions in other states, restricting access to the most-used abortion method in the U.S.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a758343 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a758343\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Meanwhile, Brazil\u2019s Congress overrode the President\u2019s veto, enforcing a law that prohibits public funding for abortions not legally authorised.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/news\/brazil-s-congress-overturns-lula-veto-on-abortion-gender-care-1490e232\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*<\/a> Anti-abortion groups support these laws, while healthcare professionals express concerns about their impact on other medical uses of these drugs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cd17688 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cd17688\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Discussions around abortion remain polarised, influenced by cultural, religious, gender and legal factors. Key concerns include increases in illegal abortions, maternal deaths, and negative effects on women\u2019s education and employment.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1f120f2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1f120f2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>To understand the implications of the US Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn Roe v. Ethical beliefs and personal values can create internal conflicts, making it difficult for them to reconcile their professional duties with their personal convictions. In such cases, performing abortions can lead to moral distress.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6e2e8bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6e2e8bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Legal constraints also play a crucial role. In regions with restrictive abortion laws, doctors may face legal risks, including criminal charges, loss of medical licenses, and other penalties. Of these respondents, 5% supporting it only during the first trimester for medical reasons, another 5% during the first and second trimesters for medical reasons, and 11% at any point for medical reasons.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ff00397 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ff00397\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This suggests most doctors support access to abortion under various conditions, reflecting a general leaning towards more liberal stances on the issue.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-94be873 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"94be873\"
