It spreads through the air by respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The measles virus can also linger in the air and on surfaces for several hours, remaining infectious.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0ada53c elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0ada53c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There has been a global rise in measles cases, with the European region experiencing a staggering 3182% increase in 2023 compared to 2022, and the USA seeing an almost 48% increase between January 2023 and April 2024 compared to the previous year. In our latest M3 Pulse survey, we asked over 7100 healthcare professionals about their concerns regarding the measles outbreak.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-efe2b29 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"efe2b29\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Most deaths from measles are from complications related to the disease including:<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eef4fe6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eef4fe6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n \t<li>Blindness<\/li>\n \t<li>Encephalitis (an infection causing brain swelling and potentially brain damage)<\/li>\n \t<li>Severe diarrhoea and related dehydration<\/li>\n \t<li>Ear infections<\/li>\n \t<li>Severe breathing problems including pneumonia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d0ef3c0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d0ef3c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Historically, measles has been a significant global health challenge. Documented as early as the 9th century, its serious implications were recognised when Francis Home demonstrated its infectious nature in the 18th century.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a758343 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a758343\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Prior to widespread vaccination, measles was a major cause of death, particularly in children. The development of a vaccine in the 1960s dramatically reduced cases worldwide, though outbreaks still occur, primarily in areas with low vaccination coverage.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/about\/history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*<\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cd17688 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cd17688\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In 2022, there were an estimated 136,000 global deaths due to measles, predominantly among children under the age of five.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/measles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*<\/a> Measles can be prevented with two doses of the vaccine. Despite the availability of effective vaccines, measles remains a public health challenge, exacerbated by disruptions in vaccination programs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bcdeb8b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bcdeb8b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Between 2021 and 2022, approximately 33 million children worldwide did not receive a measles vaccine dose. This surge indicates extensive outbreaks, with countries such as Romania, Liechtenstein, Austria, and several in Central Asia and the Middle East experiencing particularly high numbers of measles cases. Within the European Union and EEA region alone, measles cases jumped from 127 in 2022 to 2,361 in 2023, a 1759% increase. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecdc.europa.eu\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/measles-eu-threat-assessment-brief-february-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecdc.europa.eu\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/Measles%20Annual%20Epidemiological%20Report%202022%20data.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*<\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9583705 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9583705\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In the United States, where measles was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/elimination.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eliminated<\/a> in 2000, case numbers have remained low but sporadic, primarily linked to international travel. From 121 cases in 2022, the number rose to a total of 179 measles cases during the combined period of 2023 (58 cases) and up to April 2024 (121 cases), representing a 47.93% increase. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/cases-outbreaks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*<\/a> In response to this recent surge, the WHO Region of the Americas issued an epidemiological alert in January 2024, urging countries to strengthen and maintain adequate measles vaccination coverage. Although these numbers are concerning, they remain below the peak seen in 2019, which saw 1,274 measles cases, the highest number since 1992.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4fe562c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4fe562c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">In 2023, the top 10 countries with the highest number of measles cases were:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/globalhealth\/measles\/data\/global-measles-outbreaks.html\">*<\/a><\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8af9186 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8af9186\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p><ol><li>Kazakhstan &#8211; 27,280 cases<\/li><li>Azerbaijan &#8211; 26,744 cases<\/li><li>Iraq &#8211; 20,469 cases<\/li><li>India &#8211; 13,523 cases<\/li><li>Yemen &#8211; 12,785 cases<\/li><li>Kyrgyzstan &#8211; 10,024 cases<\/li><li>Pakistan &#8211; 9,575 cases<\/li><li>Russian Federation &#8211; 9,373 cases<\/li><li>Ethiopia &#8211; 6,724 cases<\/li><li>Indonesia &#8211; 4,380 cases<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e968c46 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e968c46\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The resurgence of measles cases in 2023, particularly in regions that had previously seen low incidence rates, raises critical questions about the global community\u2019s approach to vaccination and disease prevention.
